Selecting a Truck

Before buying any vehicle, you’re well advised to do some homework, calculate your exact budget, and figure out what features you need. You don’t want to snap up the first great deal you come across only to realize it isn’t the right truck for you after all. Narrow down your options by making a list of must-haves, and do some research to determine which brands and models are best suited to your purposes.

Traveling long distances? Look for a truck with a sleeper cab. Rookie driver? You might prefer a truck with automatic transmission. Carrying heavy loads? Then you’ll want to spring for a tandem axle for added stability. With some patience and diligence, you should be able to find a used truck with the right combination of features.

Inspection List

Buying a used commercial truck can save you a lot of money, but it’s important to keep in mind that the initial price tag is only one piece of the puzzle. A used truck that hasn’t been properly maintained, or a model that isn’t appropriate for your needs, can end up costing you more in the long run. Make sure you’re getting a good deal by giving the vehicle a thorough inspection before you commit.

Rule out common maintenance issues by running down this handy checklist:

  • Look for any signs of rust or other damage to the exterior, a sure indication that the truck has not been well-treated.
  • Run your hand along the bottom of each door panel to confirm the panels fit properly and haven’t gone out of joint. Also confirm that doors are able to swing freely.
  • Inspect each tire for signs of leakage, and ensure the treads are in good condition.
  • Open the hood, check the oil levels, and remove the radiator cap to check the coolant fluid. It should be green in color.
  • Test all electrical switches, lights, and window controls.
  • Start the engine and listen for any unusual sounds that could indicate an engine problem.

Did you find any parts that need to be replaced or repaired? That can be a deal-breaker, or it can be an opportunity to negotiate with the seller for a lower price. Whether or not you’re open to buying a “fixer-upper” is your choice, of course, just be sure to factor in the cost of any necessary repairs.

Test Drive Tips

Satisfied with your inspection? Then it’s time for a test drive. Travel at least 10 to 15 miles during your test drive, paying close attention to how the truck handles, and taking mental note of any questions that might come to mind. Be sure to test the brakes in a safe location, such as an empty parking lot, before you wade into traffic.

When you turn off the engine at the end of your test drive, allow it to cool for a minute or two, then start it again. If the engine hesitates, then you may want to have it checked by a mechanic.
