2025 international roadcheck
CVSA's International Roadcheck, an essential annual event in the trucking industry calendar, is fast approaching and will be held from May 13-15. Organized by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA), this event aims to enhance road safety by ensuring that commercial motor vehicles comply with regulations across Canada, Mexico, and the United States. Over the course of 72 hours, certified law enforcement officials will conduct thorough inspections at weigh stations, designated temporary inspection sites, and through mobile units, confirming adherence to federal, state, provincial, and territorial regulations. The data collected during these inspections will be analyzed and shared with the public over the summer.
Key Focus Areas of the International Roadcheck
Each year, International Roadcheck focuses on particular categories for driver and vehicle violations. During this event, inspectors primarily carry out the North American Standard Level I Inspection, which is a comprehensive 37-step process that reviews both the driver's compliance and the vehicle's mechanical condition. Although all steps will be thoroughly conducted, special attention will be given to the driver's record of duty status (RODS) and the condition of the vehicle's tires.
Driver Inspections
During this inspection, particular attention will be paid to the following key areas:
Record of Duty Status (RODS): Inspectors will scrutinize the driver's logbook for accuracy. Proper documentation is critical for compliance with Hours-of-Service (HOS) regulations, which are designed to prevent fatigue-related incidents by limiting driver working hours and ensuring adequate rest breaks.
Licenses and Certificates: Inspectors will verify the legitimacy of the driver's documents, including the commercial driver's license, medical examiner's certificate, and skill performance certificate if applicable.
Substance Use: Compliance with the Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse status in the U.S. will also be examined, alongside adherence to seatbelt regulations and checks for drug and alcohol impairment.
If a driver is found to have out-of-service violations, they will be temporarily prohibited from operating their vehicle until the issues are rectified.
Vehicle Inspections
Vehicle safety is paramount, and tire maintenance plays a crucial role in preventing accidents. Tire failures can pose serious hazards to all road users. During the International Roadcheck, inspectors will focus on:
Tire Condition: Inspectors will assess tire tread depth and inflation levels and look for signs of damage such as air leaks, tread separation, cuts, bulges, sidewall damage, and improper repairs.
Comprehensive Vehicle Checks: The vehicle portion of the Level I Inspection will cover essential components, including
- Brake systems
- Cargo securement
- Coupling devices
- Driveline components
- Driver's seat
- Fuel and exhaust systems
- Frames and lighting devices
- Steering mechanisms
- Suspension systems
- Tires, wheels, and rims
- Windshield wipers
For passenger vehicles, additional inspections will include emergency exits, seating arrangements, and electrical systems in the engine and battery compartments.
A vehicle that successfully passes a Level I or V Inspection with no critical violations may receive a CVSA decal, which is valid for up to three months.
What to Expect if Out-of-Service Violations are Found
If any out-of-service violations are identified during the inspection, as outlined in the North American Standard Out-of-Service Criteria, the vehicle will be prohibited from operating until these violations have been appropriately addressed, ensuring safety for everyone on the road.
During the International Roadcheck, inspectors will be available to address questions regarding tire health, the importance of inspections, and navigating HOS regulations pertinent to various jurisdictions. This event serves as an invaluable opportunity for drivers and operators to gain insights into compliance standards and best practices for maintaining vehicle safety.
In the case of inclement weather or other limiting circumstances during the three-day International Roadcheck event, inspectors may opt to perform a limited Level II Walk-Around Driver/Vehicle Inspection or Level III Driver/Credential/Administrative Inspection, instead of a Level I Inspection. Please note that Level II and III Inspections are not eligible for a CVSA decal.
